Including your pets in your summer holiday plans

Australia is definitely the lucky country. Our summers are envied around the world, so we might as well make the most of them! Don’t leave your pet out this year – here’s a list of summer holiday activities that the whole family can enjoy.

Day Trips

Taking a day trip with friends and family is a great excuse to get your pet out of the house and out exercising! Most dogs love taking a trip to the beach, whether they like the water or not. Alternatively, you could take your pup on a picnic to a new park. Bring along their favourite ball or a Frisbee, and you’re set up for a day out that the whole family will enjoy!

Camping

Camping is a quintessential part of Australian culture, and Australian summers! Luckily, some campsites do accommodate for the whole family (yep, including furry-family members). Best Friend Holiday Retreat in Tarra Valley, VIC is practically made for pets. Cabins are completely enclosed in fences, there is a dog-playground, hydrobath, and fenced-off exercise areas! It’s an exciting time in your household as the whole family is getting ready for a big overseas trip!

In need of a few handy hints to get prepared? We get the low-down from one of Jetpets Resident Vets Katherine.

Q: What top tips would you give to pet owners preparing their pets for a long haul flight?

A: We always recommend pet owners start the process of familiarising their pets with the travel crate early (you can find some handy hints on how to do this here.) Other things you can do to help include taking them on lots of car journeys in the travel crate so they get used to the crate and the movement, remain calm around them on the day of departure (we know it’s hard!) and add a recently worn old T shirt to the travel crate so they have the owners scent to calm them on the flight.

Q: Will my pet be fed before they fly?

A: We do not recommend feeding your pet within 8 hours of their flight as it may cause travel sickness. They will receive plenty of water throughout their journey.

Q: Will my pet get a chance to stretch their legs before they fly?

A: Yes, if you have a dog, our team ensure your pet is taken for a good walk before they fly. They will also relax in the Jetpets Transit Lounge before their flight, where they can walk around.

Cats will have the opportunity to stretch their legs in the Jetpets Transit Lounge before their flight.

Q: Why do pets have to be at the airport 3 hours before departure?

Like humans, pets are required to check in early for their flight too. The airlines require pets to be checked in 3 hours before international departure.

Q: Who loads them onto the plane?

After we check your pet in for their flight, the friendly airline staff will load them onto the plane.

Q: Where will my pet sit on the plane?

Your pet will travel in the pet’s cabin. The pets cabin is air pressured, climate controlled and dimly lit. Your pets will experience the same sounds and feelings as us, except they have a lot more leg room!

Q: Do pets get jet lag Katherine?

A: Just like humans, it’s possible that pets may also experience jet lag to a lesser extent. I’ve had the odd person tell me they think their pet had jet lag for a few days after their flight. Older pets in particular might take a bit longer to get used to their new time zone after a long flight.

Q: Do pets having any issues with a sudden change in climate?

If your pets are travelling from a hot to a very cold climate I would make sure they are kept inside or at least make sure they have a good warm coat to put on when they do go outside. If they are travelling from a cold to a hot climate, only walk them early in the morning or late in the evening and make sure they always have plenty of water and shade available (or keep them in the air-con).

The Best Off The Lead Parks to Visit in Sydney

Not only does Sydney offer some of the most spectacular tourist attractions, glorious beaches and gorgeous weather, it’s also home to some of the country’s best off the lead dog parks!

If you’re planning on heading to Sydney soon with your pup in tow, then here are some of the best off the lead parks Sydney has to offer!

Centennial Park

Location: Grand Drive and Parkes Drive, Sydney

Off the Lead: Off-lead areas available 24/7

Centennial Park is arguably the best off-lead dog park in Sydney. 158 hectares of the park are designated as off-lead areas, so there’s no doubt that your dog is going to love it.

Sirius Cove

Location: Sirius Cove Rd, Mossman 2088

Off the Lead: All day during the week, before 9am and after 4pm on weekends and public holidays

Sirius Cove is great for both land-loving and beach going dogs. There is shaded grass area for those who would prefer to stay dry, and the beach is open and accessible throughout the week for those who might want to cool off in the sea!

St Ives Showground

Location: 450 Mona Vale Rd, St. Ives, 2075

Off the lead: Off-lead areas available 24/7

St Ives Showground is great for younger dogs that are still being trained, and aren’t confident off the lead yet. The off the lead areas at St Ives are surrounded by fences, so it’s a great spot if you’re a bit worried you don’t have total control of your dog.

Warrigal Run

Location: Doonside Road, Doonside, 2767

Off the lead: 24/7

Warrigal Run is another completely fenced, off the lead dog park! Warrigal Run boasts the largest fenced, off the lead park in Sydney, so this is a good one for those dogs who need to stretch their legs! There are also some great walking paths through the park too.

The Silly Season Is Upon Us!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is on its way, and it’s a great time to have fun with the whole family (including our furry friends!)

No matter what your plans are for the festive season, it’s important to involve your pets in the Christmas celebrations to ensure they have a memorable holiday as well!

Read on for some great ideas on how you can include your pets in Christmas celebrations.

Check out the Christmas Lights:

Let’s be honest, most dogs enjoy Christmas decorations and lights as much as we do – so why not take your furry friend for a walk around the neighbourhood to check out the local displays?

Take Photos With Them:

This has to be one of our favourite ideas! Ask a friend to be your photographer (or hire one if you like!) and take a family portrait with all your of furry friends. Add a Santa hat to the top of your dog’s head or tie a cute (but loose) red bow around your cat. Have one of your family members hold the animals and smile!

Customise Your Christmas Cards:

Now that you have some amazing happy snaps of your pets, why not use them to create customised Christmas cards? Not only will they look seriously cute, your friends and family are sure to love receiving them.

Buy Them Gifts:

Gifts shouldn’t just be for humans! Pets are part of your family too so treat them to a special gift you know they will just love. Get a stocking or wrap up a few presents and place them under the tree for you to open with them on Christmas morning. Gift ideas could be toys, treats or snacks or even a new outfit! If you want to, you can splurge on something big that your pet needs or ‘wants’, like a new kennel or comfortable bed to welcome the New Year in.

Make Them A Delicious Treat:

A huge part of the Christmas season is sharing delicious food with family and friends. Include your pets in this tradition by cooking up some pet friendly treats they will be thrilled to eat. Cheesy bites, tuna treats or cookies are fun options, so they can feast while you do too! Make sure you cook animal friendly recipes to ensure you don’t feed them anything they shouldn’t be eating.

Here are some fun DIY ideas:

Dogs: Put some dry food or small treat pieces with a tiny pinch of fresh cinnamon into cardboard containers (you could even use empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls and plug each end tightly.) When your dog plays with the roll, he will smell the cinnamon, hear the dry food rattling around inside and eat his way through to get inside.

Cats: For a simple DIY holiday cat scratcher toy, take an old Christmas stocking made of a heavy duty scratchable material, cut it to open up flat, then wrap it around a piece of wood securing it tightly with twine or using a staple gun. Or – you could use a round piece of wood to create a rolling toy that your kitty will have to chase after.

A Special Rhino Move

This month, we’re sharing a very exciting rhino move we were recently involved in with our friends at Qantas.

Mtoto the African White Rhinoceros (yes all 1.7 tonnes of him!) made the trip across the Tasman from Auckland to Sydney (via Christchurch) and eventually on to his new home at Altina Wildlife Park.

Our Rescue Partnership With Virgin Australia Cargo

In August, Virgin Australia Cargo announced a new partnership with Jetpets to unite rescue pets with new, loving homes across Australia.

For the first time, Jetpets and Virgin Australia Cargo come together to fly pets in need of care across Australia, breaking down distance and travel barriers. Jetpets has had long serving relationships with the animal welfare organisations that are the current beneficiaries of the free travel allocations.

Under this partnership, the first flight took place in August, when Pet Rescue united Lallee the Rough Collie (a Lassie Dog) with her new owners in Sydney where she can look forward to being a very much loved and permanent member of the family. Thanks to this new partnership and the kindness of adopter and foster families around Australia, the future for Lallee, and other rescue dogs like her, is bright.

Since announcing this partnership we have been overwhelmed with positive messages of support. Pet lovers of Australia are certainly very passionate, as are we. Spring Is In The Air

We’re almost at the end of August, and that can only mean one thing, spring is finally upon us! And as the warmer weather approaches, we’re thinking about all the fun outdoor activities we can do with our pets this season…

Dog Park Play Dates

It’s time to put away those winter woolies and organise a play date at your local dog park for your canine pal and his or her closest friends! Not only is this perfect for socialising your dog, it’s a great way for you to meet new people too!

Beach Adventures

If you’re lucky enough to live near the ocean, take your furry friend for a run along the sand and a quick dip in the water. They will have a ball splashing in the waves and fetching driftwood or a frisbee along the shore. (Just make sure your local beach allows dogs before you make the trip.)

Go Camping

Why not go back to basics and take a camping trip with your pet? What could be better than a tent, a campfire, a BBQ and man’s best friend?
