Pet Travel Crate Regulations When Travelling With Virgin Airlines

Virgin will require that your pet travel in an accredited Pet Travel Crate. Jetpets have access to many crate sizes that are airline approved for your pet’s travel. Can My Pet Fly in the Cabin With Virgin Airlines?

No. All pets are required to be in airline approved crates for their domestic travel across Australia, with the exception of service dogs that will require special permission directly from the airline.
Virgin classifies assistance animals where they are trained to provide assistance to a person with a disability. Assistance animals may include guide dogs, hearing dogs and other assistance animals. For more information please refer to Virgin Australia’s Travelling with an Assistance Animal page..

Which Dog Breeds Can’t Fly with Virgin Australia?

Please note the following dog breeds (including cross-breeds) are prohibited for import into Australia under “The Customs (prohibited imports) Regulations 1956” and will not be accepted for travel:

  • Fila Brasilerio
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • American Pit Bull and other Pit Bull Breeds
  • Perro de Presa Canario (Presa Canario)

Domestic/non-domestic hybrids (e.g. dog-wolf crosses) are also prohibited under the “Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999”.

  • Czechoslovakian wolfdog or Czechoslovakian Vlcak
  • Saarloos wolfdog or Saarloos wolfhound
  • Lupo Italiano or Italian wolfdog
  • Kunming wolfdog or Kunming dog.

Will I Need a Veterinary Certificate for My Pet to fly with Virgin?

Pets travelling with Virgin Australia must be fit and healthy to be accepted for travel. If pets are under 12 weeks of age or over 12 years of age, Virgin will require a “Fit to Fly” Certificate from a Vet to be eligible for domestic travel. What Happens if My Pet’s Virgin Airways Flight is Delayed, or Cancelled?

When booking your flights through Jetpets, we will ensure that we are in communication with you where Virgin notifies us of any delays or cancelations. Our Pet Travel consultants will also ensure that we advise our operations teams where extended delays occur to go and check on your pet where practical.

Where flights may become cancelled, we will arrange the collection of your pet if required and contact you to discuss alternative flight options for us to book on your behalf.
